Written in prose instead of rhyming and metered verse, the Seuss Classics are my favorite of all his books…

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (1938)
Each time Bartholomew Cubbins attempts to obey the King's order to take off his hat, he finds there is another one on his head.
This is a great one to read after making Bartholomew hats!
Bartholomew and the Oobleck (1949)

This is a sequel to The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (and my favorite of the two), and follows the further adventures of the young royal page Bartholomew Cubbins of the Kingdom of Didd as he tries to clean up after King Derwin orders an ill-advised magical spell cast to create something new coming from the sky, an extremely sticky green substance known as oobleck.
King's Stilts (1939)
Every afternoon King Birtram of Binn raced around the palace on a pair of old red stilts, until they were stolen. A deep melancholy settles over the land and ruins the morale of the Cat Guard army, and the tree guarding from the dangerous Nizzards is dangerously neglected to the point where flooding is imminent. Can the King’s page boy escape the dastardly plot of the Prime Minister, Lord Droon, and renew the King's spirit and rally the Patrol Cat army to save the trees and the kingdom from the dangerous Nizzards in time? I love this book!Author and illustrator, P.D. Eastman, was a colleague and contemporary of Dr. Seuss, who wrote many books for children. His works are often mistaken for Seuss', but he had his own distinct style. I actually enjoyed his books much more than those of the good Dr.!
These are wonderful read-a-louds for Kinder and First-graders.
And two more your kids will love...
Put Me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire

Spot, a polka-dot leopard who can change colors and even juggle his own spots, tries to convince two children that he is special enough to be exhibited in the zoo.
Fish Out of Water by Helen Palmer,
P. D. Eastman (Illustrator)
When a boy feeds his new fish Otto too much food, disaster strikes! Otto grows and grows, and the boy can't find a bowl big enough for him. The police and the firemen can't help - even the town pool is too small for Otto! Finally, out of desperation, the boy calls the pet store owner, who magically restores Otto to his proper size.

Loved this book. Loved it. (Bought it today, actually!)

I always liked Dr. Seuss Day at school. It is the perfect time of year for first graders to work more with rhyming. One of those books was my kid's favorite. Dave and I can still recite it from memory. (I wonder if one of them will comment on it.....)
I love these Dr. Suess books! I remember them well!
